A Pink Slip for the President? Don't Bet on it!

Every political junkie knows that old saying:  As Ohio goes so goes the nation – at least in terms of presidential politics.  Ohio voters have picked the winner in the last 12 runs for the White House.  If they were that good at the racetrack, nobody in the state would ever have to work again.

So it’s no great surprise that Republicans like what they see in a poll that just came out about Ohio voters and their feelings regarding President Obama.

The poll, conducted by Quinnipiac University (released July 7) shows that President Obama has only a 49 to 44 percent approval rating in Ohio, numbers that Quinnipiac calls “lackluster.”  The good news for Republicans is that this is the president’s lowest approval rating in any statewide or national poll by Quinnipiac since his inauguration.  As recently as a May 6 poll by the Quinnipiac, Obama’s numbers were much stronger — 62 favorable to 31 unfavorable.

The polls also finds that, “By a small 48 – 46 percent margin, voters disapprove of the way Obama is handling the economy…. This is down from a 57 – 36 percent approval May 6.”

A word of caution to my Republican friends:  Yes, Ohio just may be the most important swing state in the nation, but don’t pop the corks on those champagne bottles yet.  In poll after poll, even as voter support for his policies fade, President Obama’s popularity remains high.  A recent Gallup poll found that 67 percent of Americans have a favorable view of the president – even though only 45 percent approve of his spending policies.

The conventional wisdom tells us that if the economy doesn’t get better soon, President Obama will own that great big problem, and before long his personal popularity will slide, just as support for his policies are already heading south.

I’m not so sure.

Let’s take a brief trip down Memory Lane.  Franklin Delano Roosevelt won an unprecedented third term in 1940 even though the national unemployment rate during his first two terms never dipped below 10 percent – and for 21 straight months, never dipped below 20 percent!

How can any president be re-elected with those crummy numbers, let alone re-elected to a third term, something that had never happened before in our nation?  There are two answers:  Roosevelt had a Republican predecessor, Herbert Hoover, to blame for the dismal economy, and FDR was Magic.  People liked him.  They trusted him.  They believed he was one of them, that he understood their problems.

Fast forward to today.  Barack Obama also has a Republican predecessor to blame for the dismal economy.  And Obama, I believe, is also Magic.  You can bet that the president will never stop blaming George W. Bush for the terrible economy, and I think he’ll convince a majority of Americans he’s right, that it’s all W’s fault.  Remember, most Americans like Barack Obama.  They trust him.  They believe he’s one of them and that he understands their problems.

So the questions, as the unemployment rate creeps up to around 10 percent and federal spending heads into outer space, are these:  What happens if the economy doesn’t get better?  What if we remain in the doldrums for months and months and months? What happens if out-of-word Americans can’t find jobs? Do the American people finally turn on Obama and give him a pink slip in 2012?   No one knows for sure, of course.  So an honest answer is … maybe.  But I don’t think so.  Magic goes a long way in politics and in life.

I think FDR got a lot of votes that third election because people wanted to be part of history. People want to feel important. Always have, always will.

    Bernie,

“Remember, most Americans like Barack Obama. They trust him. They believe he’s one of them and that he understands their problems.”

Any updates on this article? Any comments on his recent drop in his poll numbers? And most important, Do people still trust him? What I see with our President is the stereotypical dishonest politician, the guy who tells people or groups what they want to hear. His stories change with the audience. Like we learned when we were kids, the problem with lying is that eventually you forget what you said. But now we have cell phone videos and the Internet. If I have learned anything in my career, it is that disingenuous leaders will always eventually fail.

What do you think it would take for the MSM to focus on his problem with “spinning” the facts. Am I too naive to think it could happen?

    • Alan

Yes, you’re too naive to think it could happen. You see, the mainstream doesn’t think that liberals spin any facts.

    OBAMA SHOULD BE IMPEACHED IMMEDIATLY!

    • Alan

Much like President Bush didn’t commit any impeachable offense, neither has President Obama. While you might not like his policies (I certainly don’t) that’s not grounds for impeachment.

      • concernedcitizen4usa

The grounds for impeachment include, fraud, theft of public funds (for his college education because he said he had to get loans from the government ) . Oh, that was before he became president. Once his records are disclosed and eventually they will be…. the truth will set him free!!!!

  • Beverly

What can we conservatives do to “stop this craziness?” It is one thing after another. Obama is taking away all of the great things that America has always been known for. Recently this Healthcare program that “HE SAYS” everyone wants – the little facts coming out is saying that us typical taxpayer Americans are going to have Obama telling us when the Dr.’s are no longer going to help the Senior Citizens with their hospitalization/surgeries they may need – thus giving them a death sentence, ending their life. WHO GAVE HIM & HIS GOVERNMENT THE RIGHT TO DETERMINE HOW LONG WE SHOULD LIVE? HE IS OUT OF LINE & GONE TOO FAR. “HOW DO WE STOP THIS RUNAWAY TRAIN? OBAMA + PELOSI + REID SHOULD BE THROWN OUT OF OFFICE & NEVER BE ALLOWED TO HOLD A GOVERNMENT OFFICE EVER. THEY ARE “EXTREMISTS!” PLEASE tell us what we can do to stop all of this “INSANITY” & DICTATORSHIP & SOCIALISTIC MOVEMENT?”

  • C.C. Hill

This explains my ODS (Obama derangement syndrome), & it’s NOT so much Obama that has me unhinged but, as reflected in these polls, it’s the curiously unwavering, blind adulation of his followers.

I can’t account for the FDR phenomenon except that by his 3rd term everyone had Stockholm syndrome after being held hostage under his economic policies for a decade. I also cannot account for the Obama phenomenon except it appears everyone has Stockholm syndrome in reverse.

Never mind Ohio; “as goes California so goes this nation.” The conventional wisdom might also tell us -“so GOES Obama.”

  • Charles Hannagan

Maybe the presence of the alternative media and the alternative internet sites will make this a new era and not a rehash of the Great Depression. Plus, the main stream media is losing influence.

I’m hoping that the public begins to see the deceit and manipulation.

  • EddieD_Boston

Eventually the shine of Obama’s presidency will dull. The retarded House Speaker and dimwit Senate President will help his undoing because they continue to overplay their hand. Obama can’t “triangulate” because he’s as left-wing as them. The only unknown at this point is whether the GOP will run a candidate who can be elected.
PS. I’m a huge fan Bernie. Love you on the Factor.

Good article and makes me think about what our future holds. As unemployment approaches 10 percent we need to remember that employment is 90 percent which means a lot of voters still have jobs. And today the message from the Whitehouse isn’t about jobs gained, but jobs saved. I hear that companies who received stimulus money are providing their vendors with questionnaires to indicate the number of jobs saved because of their purchases. I also hear that a response to the questionnaire better not be “Zero”. This situation reminds me of the TV Show about the masked magician who demonstrates a trick and then after demonstrates how it is actually done. What seemed magically is in reality simple trickery. Never underestimate a magical president.

  • Nancy

    Mr. Goldberg–

Magic may go a long way in Harry Potter movies but I tend to believe as Martin Luther King did that ” …only when it is dark enough, can you see the stars”. Evidently we are not yet there. History and faith tell us that it is only a matter of time…

  • http://ugan.com Chris

One difference between now and then, is that in FDR’s time there was no way for people to really have any other knowledge of what was going on except what was in the news. Today we have the internet and can bypass bias news sources. History is a good milestone to look at but it is not always apples to apples.

  • VERITAS 4 USA

I believe that those who voted for Obama and who were once under his spell are slowly beginning to realize that he is the Wizard behind the curtain. He is a fraud, inept and totally incompetent. He’s an embarrassment. His words and actions clearly define his agenda, which is to enlarge the role of government, trash the constitution, diminish our rights and turn America into a Socialist state. He has lied to us and flip-flopped when convenient. He and his big government are determined to tell us how we must live our lives. He has mortgaged the future of our children with his uncontrolled spending. He has appointed TAX CHEATS, BRIBE TAKERS, LIARS, RACISTS, AND AMERICA HATERS to his cabinet, and created 34 CZARS (LAST COUNT) who are accountable to no one but himself. Russia in 200 years only had about 16 CZARS. The only hope to save America will come in 2010 and 2012 when must vote them out of office, and elect true Americans to represent us.
WAKE UP AND TAKE THE FIRST STEP IN TAKING AMERICA BACK IN 2010!

  • PJ

Oh, Mr. Goldberg! I’m afraid you’re absolutely right about “magic going a long way in politics & in life”. All one has to do is look at the way America responded to the death of Michael Jackson to realize that, in general, ours is not a thinking people. So many Americans being manipulated by those who surrounded MJ. Reminds me of how the Obama administration continually maniupulates Americans who refuse to do their homework and think for themselves. Thank you for always speaking the truth for the good of the U.S.

    • Bernie

Many thanks. I appreciate the kind words very much.

  • Gordon

Some times I wonder if we confuse what the polls really say. It seems to me that people like the person Barack Obama, but they are really starting to dislike his presidency. He still remains in campain mode where he doesn’t have to deliver specifics on programs that need real evaluation. He has a congress that doesn’t even read the items they send through and approve. He appears to be dropping like a stone, but when the time comes to make a change will anybody step up to call for it without fear of being labeled a racist? Intersting times ahead!

    • Bernie

      Interesting times ahead is RIGHT!

  • David Cooper

G-d forbid that Obama should win another election! This man will destroy this country if he is not stopped soon.

Xian Do is also right. To defeat Obama, we have to find the weak spots in the mainstream media and take them down. Despite it’s popularity, they are managing to marginalize Fox News in the public arena. They’re successfully implanting the idea that Fox News is biased and somehow the other news outlets are not.

I think the truth will eventually prevail, but in this sea of lies and darkness, we’re going to need a lot more candles.

    • Brian

The fact that Fox News had a (D) next to the names of two Republicans making speeches after scandals would show that they are either biased, or they are incompetent.

      • Alan

Way to avoid the topic altogether. The argument David makes is not that Fox News is unbiased, but that the other organizations are biased as well. You tap danced almost as well as Fred Astaire around that one.

  • Xian Do

    Good analysis, Sir.
There are a lot of people who constantly comment about how Obama is still in full campaign mode…as if he’s still trying to run for president. Most commenters point out this situation with a mild exasperation, as if they’re tempted to hurl the same type of invective towards Obama that they usually reserve for Biden…or the Left hurls at George W. Bush.
But, clearly, there is a significant method to such seeming absent-mindedness.
Obama is an effective speaker…and he can campaign like a seasoned pro. As long as he can butter up his audience, he will continue to maintain high approval ratings…and such ratings will surely be utilized by the all-too complicit Mainstream Media to offset any negative polling….

(i.e.- “President Obama is still showing strong approval ratings despite the faltering economy/public antipathy towards Congress/TARP Spending backlash/whatever…..”)

Perhaps it would be a good idea to start paying more attention to those men & women behind the proverbial curtain…?
