Sorry, I kind of gave up on that thread. CW doesn't give a break to actually get back to the point of the thread.

I only saw the first half of the program. He may have offered some ideas later. But those of us fighting horse slaughter do have a plan. We go to Washington, DC and lobby Congressmen's offices, set up meetings and try to reason with them. We offer the facts and statistics we've collected to support our position. We don't have money, so we try to steal away with out time. It really pays to pay Congressmen you know. You can pay them in vacations, for speaking engagements, and in campaign contributions. We don't do that. The slaughter industry pays lobbyists, one of their top lobbyists these days is Democrat, former Senator Chuck Stenholme from TX. Prior to him, sitting Representative Bob Goodlatte-R VA was the loudest voice and put a hold on the bill to stop horse slaughter for human consumption by a previous bill number. Now they have a new spokesman and a tap dancer I understand but only in airport men's rooms. Yup, good ole Sen. Larry Craig is now dancing for the slaughter industry with holds on the American Horse Slaughter Prevention Act. I'm sure if you asked these men they would no doubt tell you that it's a moral decision, ...all of a sudden they care. I guess toe tappy Larry needs some campaign contributions after his good times in MN.

To become independently informed on this bill you should go to the official Congressional site http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/thomas and then from there you can read the bill, this is the House version and then you can visit the Senate version by clicking where it says Bill Summary & Status then Related Bills. While you are there you can click on Cosponsors to see who signed on to the bill and see if your Congressmen are there.

If you want our prejudice resources you can visit http://www.marynash.org and a veterinary opinion Veterinarians for Equine Welfare http://vetsforequinewelfare.org/ is exellent. There you will find resources that will keep you busy for months reading. We've been at this for many years now. I was quoted in Mary Nash, all of the toxins that are consumed by horses, the drugs, the sprays and parasite control, and so on add up to some toxic meat. So one day I started listing some of the things I gave to my senior horse, and he was just a pasture potato so he wasn't even competing at the time and I only made a partial list. Considering that the majority of American horse is consumed in France I followed the list by saying,... "Choke on that Pierre!" and everyone loved it. Next thing I'm reading an article that said, Mr. Heimlich, meet Pierre. I can be a little sarcastic when provoked.

Oh my gosh, I have to stop writing, LOL. Sorry.

[quote="Topher"]I did ask a question in the other thread, but I think it got lost in the static...

As I didn't see the report, did Bernie make any recommendations for actions we should take? Or should we just stop watching horse racing on television, stop going to the racetrack (I did go to Churchill Downs last year--for a Police concert), or do we need to do more (write our Congressmen, etc.)?

(I don't even have cable, much less HBO, as I never seem to have the time to watch TV.)

Thanks!

Thanks for the information. I'll give it a look over the weekend and see what I can do. A good friend of mine is an equine vet tech, so I'll get her feedback on the issue as well.

Good luck!

Most vets are not well informed on horse slaughter. But you should give the vet tech the link for Veterianrians for Equine Welfare. One of the vets that started this organization testified before Congress, Dr. Patricia Hogan. She is a highly renowned vet. The AVMA supports horse slaughter and calls it humane. We have proven repeatedly that it is not but you have to look at how they make their money and which vet is running the AVMA. Now there is an alternative Vet organization who stands apart but most of the members will not come out publicly for fear of retribution. How's that sound???

People want to do whatever they feel like doing, whether it's raise dogs in cages so they can make money, we call them puppy mills or horse slaughter for human consumption in an assembly line of death. Just because someone wants to do something doesn't make it right. Some people stick a needle in their arm and some snort cocaine, some drink and want to drive drunk, and some of them want to break into your house to steal what you have to pay for their party.

My point, just because someone wants to do something and demands their rights doesn't make it acceptable in a civilized society.
