Gun Solutions not Gun Control

In the wake of the Connecticut school shooting, there is a desire to do something to try to prevent similar types of incidents from occurring again.  The liberals understand this, and have run with it.  They have run in the direction that feels good, but has no proof of effectiveness.  Conservatives have the solution that has been proven everywhere it has been tried, yet are silent on this issue.  Rather than Republicans answering questions about bad Democratic ideas, the President should be answering questions about Republican legislative proposals.  Where is the proposal from a republican to allow for concealed carry rights throughout the country?  This has helped reduce gun violence everywhere it has been tried, and could be administered by each state.  With one proposal the conversation could be changed from what feels good to what works.

There are now 39 states that have concealed carry laws (where you can receive a concealed weapon permit if you meet certain criteria).  This is up from 9 states that had these laws in 1986, and has been pointed to as being instrumental in the drop in gun violence in these states.  The recent shootings in CT and Colorado were cases where concealed carry guns were not allowed.  In the case of Sandy Hook school, it is not allowed in the entire state.  In the case of the Colorado movie theater, there is concealed carry allowed in Colorado, but specifically not allowed in that particular theater.  Imagine if the 5-10% of the population who typically carry guns when permitted, had them in that Colorado theater that night, or in the Sandy Hook school that day.  How many lives might have been saved?  Concealed carry should be part of the national debate on guns.

In 2008 some of the strictest gun control laws were lifted in Chicago and Washington DC.  According to the conventional wisdom in the media, this was supposed to lead to the “wild west”.  Instead gun crime and murder rates have plummeted in both cities.  The fact that you have heard nothing from the media in terms of the removal of these gun control laws, is all that you need to know.  If there was a case to be made that the elimination of gun control led to more crime, rather than hearing crickets, it would be force fed to us daily in the anti-gun media!  This is typically what happens when these laws are removed or concealed carry is implemented.  John Lott has been a leading light on this issue started with his book, “More Guns, Less Crime”.

Right now all we hear from Democrats and the media is which guns we can eliminate, or what restrictions we can put on the law abiding citizenry.  Even gun advocates are taking a narrow, elitist view with the idea of one armed guard in each school.  Where are the voices advocating more freedom to defend ourselves from horrific crimes such as these?  With over 200 million guns currently in the US, we already know the bad guys can get them.  Let’s let the good guys to have them as well.

Apart from the statistics I quoted below, I can think of one other interesting one:
Cities and states run by Democrats have vastly higher murder rates in general and firearms-related murder rates than any other.

I live in Mississippi, where open carry of handguns is a civil right. Actually, it’s a civil right throughout the United States. Our legislature apparently is the only one which actually READ the Bill of Rights. I personally don’t fell as threatened by gun crime as I did when I lived across the border in Louisiana (where most of the gun deaths happen in gun-controlled New Orleans).

http://www.justfacts.com/guncontrol.asp shows that in states where shall-issue or “right-to-carry” laws were passed, gun murders dropped precipitously from well above national averages down to the national average.

Other interesting facts (from http://gun.laws.com/gun-statistics#sthash.FM7tboB2.dpuf ):

“Although there are nearly 30,000 gun deaths per year in America, more than 60% of those are suicides

The firearm murder rate has dropped by 40% in the past 15 years (murder, 45 percent; rape, 31 percent; robbery, 47 percent; and aggravated assault, 37

States with Right-to-Carry laws have lower violent crime rates, on average, compared to the rest of the country: total violent crime by 31 percent, murder, 39 percent; robbery, 55 percent; and aggravated assault, 19 percent.

More than 80,000 Americans a year used guns in an effort to protect themselves or their property against crime

More than 2 million crimes prevented each year by the presence of privately-owned firearms.

In 2008, our nation had it’s lowest violent crime rate since 1973 and its lowest murder rate since 1965.”

These facts make nonsense of the Obama Administration’s assertions regarding gun crimes.

Why do I see this gun debate as a coverup. As Rahm Emanual said “take advantage of a crisis” Sandy Hook mourns the loss of children, friends, teachers, and neighbors. HOWEVER, Obama wants to rush through gun laws the way healthcare was rushed into law. NO discussion or exploration of what courses such terrible assaults.. What about the illegal guns. Could it be that the word ILLEGAL is a bad word that shouldn’t be used therefore we can’t go out and look for those guns. With the millions of LEGAL guns out there why aren’t there more assaults on schools and businesses. Could it be because legal gun owners respect the danger a gun could cause and keep them in lock boxes.
Could there be a coverup?. No one is talking about Bengazi Murders, Hurricane Sandy. Obamacare, the smaller paycheck because of higher taxes, the debt ceiling and fiscal mess. MSM where are you? LETS HURRY UP GET NEW GUN LAWS WHILE SANDY HOOK MOURNS. Remember the CRISIS!

Taxes are killing people more than guns. They are killing the spirit of many Americans, killing new ideas because of the fear of taxes and if you get to rich you have to spread the wealth..

Don’t take my beebe gun or water pistol.

Hey, you laugh, but in Britain, at least once the local SWAT team raided a house because the kids were popping air guns off in the back yard. That wasn’t a mis-identification problem, either. It’s actually illegal to have air guns outside of a registered gun club in Great Britain.

Britain, sadly for those of us who have been there and loved the people and their countries (Wales, England and Scotland – three countries, and for now at least, one nation), is a very useful laboratory for what happens when you progressively make gun ownership less and less legal. Both gun crime and crime in general have escalated beyond current US rates in the past two decades.

While, after the sunset provisions kicked in and the Clinton/pre-1994 Congress’ assault weapons ban expired, gun murder rates and murder rates in general in the United States have continued to fall. That’s right, less gun control correlates very reliably here with less crime.

And that works for side-by-side comparisons in the United States, as well. While a few states like Mississippi and Louisiana with libertarian state gun laws have high gun crime rates (with most of the crime in the large cities, where urban social problems of every type are higher and all exacerbate each other), in general, the “shall issue” states and cities have signifcantly lower gun crime rates than states in which gun control is relatively strict.

Obama, Jarrett and Holder = Hitler, Goring and Himmler. Control the reins of Govt and have “your man” in charge of the Govt police agencies. It’s the key to total control over an unarmed populace. Our schools should start teaching history again and we could possibly avoid another Obama type administration IF we survive this one.

Because guns scare the loooooney left. They think law enforcement should be like Barney Fife, an empty gun and one bullet in the pocket.

So you’re saying you would be happy if concealed carry was allowed in your children’s schools or movie theaters where your parents could be enjoying a film? Or anywhere like that?

Nobody’s saying they’re scared of guns outright — but they’re scared of guns in situations and places that aren’t appropriate for guns. Yet that’s where many mass murders happen.

      • Wheels55

Yes, I would be happy with the right people carrying guns anywhere. Personally, I think most gun owners do not have the skills needed to carry. I wouldn’t be opposed to concealed carry laws requiring more safety & skill classes and testing. Yet, I know many who have great skills and would be very safe to sit next to in a movie or at a PTA meeting or even teaching your child. These people are not the whackos that commit mass murders.
