Santorum’s Strength in Kansas

Kansas is the first state to vote after Super Tuesday — and it looks likely that Rick Santorum will score another victory here. “My instinct from talking to different party leaders is that Santorum is probably in the lead, probably has the most support,” says Clay Barker, executive director of the Kansas Republican party. On Tuesday, Santorum took Oklahoma, Kansas’s southern neighbor, and the strengths that helped him triumph there should help him in Kansas too.

Todd Tiahrt, a former Kansas congressman who personally supports Santorum, thinks that Santorum holds strong appeal for blue-collar workers in Kansas. “He kind of resonates with working people and the small-business owners because of his talking about strengthening the American economy and American jobs,” Tiahart says. Santorum’s strong pro-life views also play well with those voters.
