A Polarizing President…

We heard it so many times from the national media that it practically became their official mantra: George W. Bush was a polarizing figure.  Fair enough.  He was.  Republicans supported him while Democrats detested not just his politics but pretty much everything about him.

But “polarizing” seems to be a word that has fallen out of favor these days — with journalists and other Democrats and liberals. Sort of like “global cooling,” which you may recall used to be quite popular with liberals in and out of the media – until it wasn’t.

Now we have a new Gallup poll (released July 12) and it makes you wonder why “polarizing” has lost so much of its cache.  The poll shows that Democrats give Barack Obama an astonishing 90 percent approval rating.  Ninety percent!  Youc can’t get much higher than that. Republicans aren’t quite so infatuated.  Only 23 percent of them support the president. Twenty-three percent!  You can’t get much lower than that. So, let’s do the math:  90 minus 23 equals a Grand Canyon size chasm of 67 points.

And it’s worse now than it was just a few months ago.

Back in April, President Obama had the support of 88 percent of Democrats and only 27 percent of Republicans – a huge gap for sure, but one of “only” 61 points.  Writing at the time in the Wall Street Journal, Karl Rove, the “architect” of Bush’s two presidential victories, said that, “This gap is 10 points higher than that of George W. Bush’s at this point in his presidency.”  Rove also said that no US president in the past 40 years has done more to polarize America so much, so quickly, as President Obama.

To which Joe Klein, one of Time magazine’s many liberal commentators, responded with a blog headlined, “World’s Stupidest Argument.”

“Bush flunkies trying to argue that Obama is more polarizing than Bush was,” said Klein. “Given the fact that Obama had to take dramatic action, at home and abroad, to start lifting the country from the mess Bush made almost everywhere–and also begin to turn the country away from the myopia and greed of the Reagan era–it’s amazing that he hasn’t raised more dust or teabags. … In the long run, it’s a safe historical bet that Bush will prove more polarizing than Obama because he was such an abject failure in the job.”

I’m glad to see that Joe Klein has a crystal ball and can tell us how history will judge President Obama.  I don’t. So let’s stick with today.  And today, Barack Obama is as polarizing as a politician can get.

The past is prologue, as the old saying goes.  So take a look at what I wrote in A Slobbering Love Affair about how the mainstream media covered the Obama campaign for the White House.  When you understand how liberal journalists think – how they made the leap from old media bias to new media activism — everything you’re witnessing now will make sense.

Joe Klein should just have the guts to tell the truth that he is a partisan hack who can’t help himself when he praises any liberal and attacks any conservative. I guess the worse thing I could wish on Joe Klein is that I hope he could be ruled in all respects by the very liberals he adores and see how he likes it once the glaze is wiped off his face. He is one guy who will ALWAYS choose the socialistic answer to any problem. He tries to pass himself off as a professional, unbiased journalist, but he is nothing more than a partisan hack.

Oh yeah, I totally agree with Bernie that Obama is divisive.

I fear that President Obama will never be held accountable. Of anything. I wish that fear was of the irrational variety.

Mr. Goldberg I had the opportunity to read “A Slobbering Love Affair” and literally could not put the book down once I opened it! It was a great read, but more importantly, it was a factual account of the mainstream media’s love for this community organizer we call President Obama! They have truly lost their minds when it comes to him, as well as his administration. It’s a crying shame to turn the television on and have to listen to outright lies! The only question I have is: What can we do to change anything, before it’s too late? I’ve called, written, and emailed my Congressmen. It seems to be falling on deaf ears. The sneakiness of Barack and his cohorts, make this seem that much more chilling. I am praying to God to make the necessary changes, because I certainly am losing faith in our ability to be heard. It just seems like anyone who doesn’t go along with this administrations agenda, has a voice anymore. But BHO is NOT polarizing…Someone wake me up, I must be dreaming………

I am more than disgusted, despairing, angry, apprehensive- words fail me by which to effectively expel, and therefor relieve, the depth and passion of my despair. There is a complete absence of integrity in America. A prostitution of words and their objectivie meaning. A self serving narrowmindednes, slyness, and intentional manipulation of truth by souless, spineless polititians, uninteligent, ignorant media commentators, sound bite philosophers and average citizens. Conservatives, of which I am one, are no less to blame for the current disgrace of American society. What difference does it make knowing right from wrong if we do nothing but watch from the sidelines and critisize. How can anyone watch the current Sotmayor hearing, or any other current social political issue of the day, and pretend that objectivity exists in Washington. This administration too shall pass. Will they leave anything of value in society behind?

    Mr Goldberg–

Any chance we could clone you for the sake of journalistic integrity? I thought I had seen a blurb on c-span about a congressional panel looking into media bias–was I dreaming? Haven’t heard or seen anything about that since…

  • EddieD_Boston

It is amazing that the MSM is as biased as they are. What’s even more amazing to me is the fact they are losing money/viewers/readers but continue with business as usual. They’ll all be out of business someday and will attribute it to either the Internet or all of those stupid republican voting rednecks who watch FoxNews and listen to talk radio.

PS. Have you seen the headlines about all of the soldiers dying in Afghanistan? Didn’t think so.

    Mr. Goldberg said:

“I’m glad to see that Joe Klein has a crystal ball and can tell us how history will judge President Obama.”

I suspect that Klein doesn’t need a crystal ball to predict how history will view Bush vs. Obama any more than I need a crystal ball to predict what I plan to have for dinner tonight.
Just like my dinner plans, the only thing Klein needs is a determination to “cook up” exactly what he wants.

The only real question is whether or not future generations will partake of Klein’s “goulache révisionniste d’histoire”.

Frankly, I don’t think I could stomach it.

Like Bernie, I have no problem with the news media categorizing Bush as a polarizing figure, as long as they also acknowledge that Obama is polarizing as well… but that won’t happen.

The mainstream media always likes to think of themselves as a good cross-section of the country, regardless of what the polls show.

  • http://jimtreacher.com Jim Treacher

“Obama isn’t as polarizing as Bush because I like Obama and I hate Bush.” These guys actually get paid to write this stuff down.

    • http://jimtreacher.com Jim Treacher

You see those little marks at the beginning and end of that sentence?

      • Sharon Sullivan

I find the kind of change offered by the Obama administration scary. I really enjoy your commentaries on Fox News and appreciate your objectivity. Thanks.

      Very Funny!!!

  • Mike

Great writing Mr. Goldberg! Kind of reminds me when the media almost overnight switched from calling terrorists “terrorists” to insurgents! I guess that was just too offensive!

  • Joe Vermilya

Mr. Goldberg-do you think the press will ever return to a semblance of “fair”reporting.
    Joe Vermilya

    • Bernie

i think about this a lot, Joe, and I’m leaning in the direction of … NO. I hope I’m wrong. stay tuned.

      • John

Just out of curiosity Bernie, who in the current news media impresses you, as far as fairness? Personally, I think Chris Wallace does a great job, and I like seeing Jake Tapper actually ask good, substantive questions of Robert Gibbs. Lastly, I must say that Bill O’Reilly himself has really stepped up to the plate (of course, saying that probably makes me a right-wing loon, ha ha). But unfortunately, for every one of them, there’s 10 Obama cheer-leaders in the news media. You’ve made the point a few times that this is really bad for democracy, and I think we’re really seeing that now with what’s going on in our country.

This isn’t really anything new. The media has been this way for years. How about them mentioning that England declared h1n1 a epidemic, or Sotamayor is a commie and a racist like Ginsberg? Not ever going to happen. How about the 50 Americans killed everyday by the illegals? Same thing, not going to cover it here by the MSM’s!
