I typically don't write about my family life or my faith in my columns for this website, but I hope you'll indulge me on this rare occasion, since I'm feeling the need to get my thoughts on an ongoing personal struggle down in writing. A child's annual physical at the doctor's office is typically more of a formality than anything. A yearly exam is required to attend school in most parts of the country, and it usually lasts no longer than 15 minutes. The doctor looks the child over, and asks a few questions. Parents voice any concerns they might have. The appointment ends with smiles, and everyone goes their separate ways.
