Where was Scott Pelley during Covid when government ordered lockdowns, fired workers who would not get vaccinated, when social media was ordered to lock down opposing views, if you mentioned alternative treatments, you were shamed and your posts taken down. You're right Bernie, I can't trust a journalist when they are clearly in one camp or the other. He is no longer a journalist.
Hello Bernie, your commentary is excellent today. But I think CBS should go step further and remove him from the 60 minute show altogether. He's basically has become a "has been", and 60 minutes is a garbage production in my opinion.
James Post's reply mirrors mine. I never said Pelley wasn't factual, or that he didn't have a right to speak. That wasn't my point at all. Rather, it was that once he exercises that right, he shouldn't be allowed to cover the person he has such strong feelings about. If he were to report about President Trump now, we'd know how he really feels about him -- and we shouldn't know what news reporters think or feel about the people they cover.
Completely agree with you on the principle, Bernie. The only question I have is - is it really breaking news that Pelley doesn't like Trump? Didn't we already know that?
Fair enough. Seeing as 60 Minutes is on a break now until the new season starts, I guess we'll have to wait and see what stories Scott Pelley gets assigned to. Maybe he never will do anything related to the President!
I don't think that's the biggest problem happening in journalism right now though.
I can't even recall the last time I watched 60 Minutes (a once a week news-magazine that draws 8M viewers on average and is currently off air).
So I found it a bit weird you'd use an off the cuff segment to cover what is basically a non-issue that has already blown over.
Factual but implicitly casting one side of the ideological spectrum as being heavily responsible for the problem. For some reason, I don't think he was speaking of the dangers of being Riley Gaines, or Ben Shapiro, and giving a speech on a college campus.
Bernie spoke, quite legitimately, of the impact of what Pelley said on Pelley's professional duties.
Pelley is supposed to be an objective reporter, and when he exercises his right to free speech, his comments can compromise his supposed journalistic fairness. Based upon what he expressed in his speech, he cannot be expected to cover some news matters with objectivity. That is a reasonable matter for Bernie to address. Citing conflict of interest is fair game.

So, The Biggest Problem with Scott Pelley's Commencement Speech is that his comments were factual?
Or that he exercised his 1st amendment rights as a public figure?
Because that's a pretty bad precedent to set in terms who's allowed to comment on the current state of affairs.
