Please help us to understand why the mainstream media is unable to change their business models in the face of record monetary losses and customer abandonment. In the end aren't these businesses and corporations with shareholders who, I assume, are vaguely interested in making a profit? I can't imagine another business ignoring this overwhelming evidence of a failing operation.
In the days of yore, the TV news was a lost leader. From everything I can glean, all three news outlets lost money. In a way, I long for those years in one form or another.
Cable news outlets don't adjust their business models because they think these models are their best hope. These outlets are losing eyeballs not so much because of blatant partisanship and one-sidedness but because eyeballs are increasingly going to "alternative" news sources or are simply tuning out. Cable news outlets think their best hope is to cater to collective passions.
