John: I genuinely like to stay out of the morass of the culture wars and taking fake offense at every utterance of the opposition, but Tim Kaine’s comments last week give me pause. To quote the senator from Virginia, the home of Thomas Jefferson, “The notion that rights don’t come from laws and don’t come from the government, but come from the Creator — that’s what the Iranian government believes. They do it because they believe that they understand what natural rights are from their Creator. So, the statement that our rights do not come from our laws or our governments is extremely troubling.” I’m troubled because having rights endowed by our Creator is one of the core principles of America and is clearly articulated in our founding documents. To my knowledge, Senator Kaine has not clarified or walked these comments back. Nine years ago, he came within a whisker of being our vice president. Are you as bothered by this as I am?
I wonder if there's context to this remark that would put it in another light.
Taking the remark as it is, I'd first ask what rights is he talking about. For example, the language of the 1st, 2nd and 4th Amendment indicate that those rights were pre-existing but that the federal gov., now also the state and local govs as per the 14th A., will protect those rights. The language of the COTUS does not indicate that various other rights are pre-existing. Take for example the rights given in the 5th and 6th Amendments.
Last night I heard on talk radio some right-winger ranting about Kane's remarks. Keep in mind, that these lunatics look for things to foment outrage - they're outrage mongers. Otherwise, they wouldn't be raking in the big bucks and might even be forced to look for productive work. As Glen Beck stated in his book Addicted to Outrage, outrage is as addictive as crack cocaine.
Nowhere in the COTUS - the primary legal document of the USA - is there mention of a creator.
The DOI - which has no legal authority but can be considered the spirit of the USA - states that "inalienable rights endowed by their creator" include life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. What other rights are endowed by our creator? All constitutional rights? All rights legislated by federal, state or local govs?
Although Kane's remarks are a little puzzling, I think, as we say in Hawaii, "it ain't no big ting brah."
John, Which is most prevalent at present? The Herd Syndrome or TDS? I've been accused of TDS AND Hegseth syndrome purely for my silly comment over Hegseths 'War Dept.' title and how so original this guy tries to be. My suggestion to them was let's name it the ' Stomp your Ass Dept.' as it has a nicer ring to it. The MAGA commentors weren't amused, to say the least.
Partisan political animosity is normal, but What did Trump actually do that created so much personal hate towards him. All politicians lie. All politicians make campaign promises they can’t keep. And Trump isn’t the only President carrying embarrassing baggage in his personal life. I’ve Followed politics my whole life. I remember how vilified Nixon was. This is 100 times worse. I mean, who started “ Trump Derangement Syndrome “. Make sense of this. I’ve never seen our country more polarized politically. Congress is acting like bunch of entitled, spoiled, kids.
Hi John, what do make of the Charlie Kirk assassination and the comments of President Donald Trump who has pointed the finger at the rhetoric coming from the "radical left" as the cause (without any evidence), and the bizarre comment of Pete Hegseth, "Well done, good and faithful servant." after the event?
America has a long history of political assassinations, will this be the norm over the next few years in a deeply fractured and polarized society?
