I would have liked to have seen Trump condemn ALL political violence in his Oval Office speech last night. He rightly called out Radical Leftist hatred and rhetoric, but conveniently omitted the fact that in politics every action has an equal and opposite reaction. The assassination attempt on Trump, the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the shooting of Steve Scalise, the assassination of the United Health CEO, the burning of Teslas; along with the assassination of the Democratic state representatives in MN, the attempted kidnapping of Gretchen Whitmer, the shooting of Gabby Giffords years ago, January 6, and on and on.

In a country that can't agree on ANYTHING, can't we at least agree that political violence is wrong and needs to be condemned no matter who is doing it?

A friend of mine for over 60 years who was part of our golf group that travelled ever year for our outings, sent me the most hateful email. Why, because I am a conservative. He hasn’t golfed in our group since before Covid. I never comment on his hateful posts. But when he told the story of a grandfather deported by Ice and I found it to be fake news, I commented this on his post. That’s when the firestorm started. He doesn’t care that it’s fake. To him it’s the point of the story that matters. By the way, he’s a retired teacher. God bless Charlie Kirk.

Haters’ gonna Hate!

The willfully ignorance of the partisan hacks is terrible because unfortunately there is no cure for stupid! No political ideology or party has a market on willful stupidity; sadly there is an unlimited supply of foolishness to go around

<There are too many guns in America, she told us — to which I replied, “The Supreme Court ruled on that a while ago.”

<She had an answer to that. “The Supreme Court got it wrong.” Her husband agreed. “So the Supreme Court got it wrong and you two are smarter than the justices who ruled on the matter.”

<Another quick response from the wife: “Yes,” she said with no hesitation.>

You should have informed her that comparing her intelligence to the SCOTUS justices has nothing to do with this. The SCOTUS has the final say on the interpretation of the COTUS. PERIOD. END OF DISCUSSION.

But the SCOTUS has given us mortals much leeway in enacting gun control.

First, the assault weapons ban should be re-enacted. It'll be contested legally. The SCOTUS or the court of last resort will determine whether assault weapons, as defined by statute, are of "common use" - meaning they are protected by the 2nd A. - or whether they are "dangerous and unusual," in which case citizens have no 2nd A. right to possess them. The sale and possession of machineguns is so regulated that they are, in effect, banned. To my knowledge, no one has filed suit claiming machineguns are covered by the 2nd A.

Second, states or the feds can require those purchasing or possessing any firearms to be licensed. There can be a requirement that someone must take a proper course in firearm use and care before he can possess or buy one.

Third, the sale of arms can be strictly regulated as long the regulations are tailored to safety. Of course, the SCOTUS or the courts of last resort might need to say whether any given regulation violates the 2nd A.

That said, the shooting in Utah was deplorable. We're not living under British rule in the 1700's. There are a whole slew of ready avenues to ensure political expression and to effect change. Any violence, including political violence, should not be tolerated, but for violence necessary for self-defense

Great piece, Bernie. The political climate is absolutely disgusting. As another writer put it, we need to stop selectively condemning murder and start collectively condemning it. Two children and a wife lost a father and a husband and will have to trudge on without him. His death is a tragedy. I really wish the country could finally stop the madness and say “enough”, and end the division. The leftists who are celebrating and/or excusing this atrocity are awful people. Likewise, the right wing overlords who use this as a weapon against everyone who didn’t vote for Trump are awful too. We should all be able to come together on things like this and collectively condemn it. I don’t understand why people’s opinions on murder and violence differ based on the political beliefs of the doer/ the victim. This is a very ugly time in our country

Sir Bernie —- I wonder how those same commenters felt, (including your friends that you went to dinner with) when the woke New Orleans district attorney who released a violent carjacker was eventually carjacked by that same thug while the district attorney’s 79 year-old mother had been with him in the car. I guess they don’t see the irony of that.

There’s another side of TDS you don’t mention in your article Bernie.

The other TDS are all the people on the right - good Christian, conservative, constitutional originalists, who watch this man lie in a pathological nature, see him be credibly accused by life long republicans who worked in his administration or at the state level of attempting to submit fake electors to congress and defraud the American people, who see him lose 60 lawsuits then never concede defeat in the 2020 election, see him lead his supporters to attack the US Capitol, see him pardon those people many who attacked the police, see him pursue every mamby pamby weird legal theory he can dream up, see him use the military for domestic law enforcement and use the DOJ to attack his enemies and make a mockery of God’s words, and still find a way to support him. That’s another form of TDS.

Yes, I’ve already had to unfriend someone who posted nasty things Guess about Charlie Kirk. I thought this person was above that, but I guess not. Good riddance. I guess it shows that you never really know people like you think you do.

Even Cenk Uygur angrily stated that anyone that has to resort to violence to get their points across obviously aren’t able to make an effective argument

Kudos to Cenk
