Obama: The World Is About to End … (Or Not)

O-SequesterI’m listening to the news on television and I hear President Obama tell us that if sequestration goes through the world as we know it will cease to exist, hard times will come down on us like the proverbial ton of bricks.

No, he didn’t use those exact words but that was the message.  Here’s what he said:

“Emergency responders, like the ones who are here today, their ability to help communities respond to and recover from disasters will be degraded.  Border Patrol agents will see their hours reduced.  FBI agents will be furloughed.  Federal prosecutors will have to close cases and let criminals go.  Air traffic controllers and airport security will see cutbacks, which means more delays in airports across the country.  Thousands of teachers and educators will be laid off.  Tens of thousands of parents will have to scramble to find childcare for their kids.  Hundreds of thousands of Americans will lose access to primary care and preventive care like flu vaccinations and cancer screenings. This is not an abstraction.  People will lose their jobs.  The unemployment rate might tick up again.”

All of this can be avoided, of course, if only those plutocrat Republicans would raise more taxes on their rich friends – and spare the sainted middle class the horrors of spending cuts, which aren’t really cuts when you get down to it, but decreases in the rise of spending.

Of course, Republicans are willing to eliminate the loopholes Mr. Obama is constantly telling us favor only those who fly around in private jets when they’re not loafing around in their humongous mansions.  But the it’s always been done is we lower tax rates and close the loopholes.  Mr. Obama, being the transformational figure that he is, wants to raise taxes and close the loopholes. Why?  So he can get more money to spend on more government programs, which Democrats will use as a kind of legal bribe to get more votes for … take a guess … Democrats.

We have in office a deeply cynical man who can get away with this nonsense for just one reason:  He knows he can count on the shallowness of all those Americans who adore him.  Or to put it another way, President Obama succeeds because a lot of Americans are really, really dumb.

I’m pretty sure he has little respect for conservatives.  But I’m absolutely sure he has no respect for the chuckleheads who think he walks on water and fall for everything he tells them.  Yes, he needs their support.  But no, he doesn’t have an ounce of regard for them.  He knows what you know:  that they’re clueless.

An editorial in the Wall Street Journal under the headline “President Armageddon” puts it this way:

“Americans need to understand that Mr. Obama is threatening that if he doesn’t get what he wants, he’s ready to inflict maximum pain on everybody else. He won’t force government agencies to shave spending on travel and conferences and excessive pay and staffing.  He won’t demand that agencies cut the lowest priority spending as any half-competent middle manager would.

“It’s the old play to stir public support for all government spending by shutting down vital services first.”

Why else would the president tell us that, “Federal prosecutors will have to close cases and let criminals go”?

No one with half a brain could possibly believe this.  How would it come about?  A trial ends because the judge got laid off?  The prosecutor lost his job?  There wasn’t enough money to pay the jurors for lunch?  The clerk ran out of money to keep the lights on in the courtroom?

Question: Why not just cancel a judicial conference to some swank resort and save the money that way?  Answer:  Because that would make sense and would deprive the president the ability to scare not-too-smart voters.

If sequester goes through, the president tells us, we may face another recession.  But as the Wall Street Journal points out:  “Mr. Obama just whacked the economy with a roughly $160 billion tax increase in 2013 that he says will do no harm, but he wants us to believe that $85 billion in spending cuts will trigger a recession.”

He not only wants us to believe it, he knows millions of us will believe it.  For more than four years now I have tried, with little success, to tell my conservative friends not to underestimate Barack Obama.  He posses the kind of magic that few politicians possess.  And it enables him to pull all sorts of rabbits out of his hat.

If sequester goes through, expect lots of made-for-television moments. Museums in Washington will close and tourists will be interviewed on TV.  “We came here with our four kids all the way from Des Moines,” one dejected Mom or Dad will almost certainly say.  “And the Smithsonian is closed down.  Little Maggie was looking forward to seeing all the neat stuff in there. Now she’s so sad.”

If you think Barack Obama will be blamed, go back to sleep.  He won’t.  Republicans will.  In fact, here’s a good rule of thumb that will come in handy many times between now and the end of Mr. Obama’s presidency:

Republicans will be blamed for everything.  Period.

As for sequestration, I’m rooting for it to happen.  We spend too much and President Obama and his Democratic pals in Congress don’t think we have a spending problem.  In fact, they want to spend more.  They can tax the rich all they want and it won’t be nearly enough to foot the bill for every thing they want government to do.

As far as I’m concerned – and I’m guessing I’m not alone – sequester away.  Cut everything with the proverbial meat cleaver.  And when we get done cutting, cut some more.  This government is out of control.  But in a free country the people get the government they deserve. And boy, did we get it.

Mr. O is like most liberals, do as I say not as I do. He does one thing extremely well,
campaigning for election. He still doesn’t get that he won!

  • Kevin Hubble

If the Republicans aren’t fools (which they are I fear) what’s going to happen in the sequester, if it happens, will be the same thing that happened in the government shutdown under President Clinton. Instead of cancelling conferences and reducing travel as you suggest-the easy stuff-Barack Obama will do what President Clinton did and require people like my wife who is a nurse at a VA hospital to remain on their jobs without pay. The same will be true of other truly “essential” federal employees (air traffic controllers, et al). The media will then seek out those employees who are working without pay and those employees facing the most dire of circumstances such as one-income families, those facing foreclosure, those with handicapped children or family members etc. The President and the media will then highlight the plight of these people and say if the Republicans weren’t such heartless SOBs this would all be fixed. Sadly the GOP will then fold child a cheap suit. It always happens this way. But, I hope not. Sequester away, I say!

    • Wheels55

I think you are correct. After all, politicians do not waste a crisis, even if they manufactured the crisis in the first place. The public will never cry over fewer government conferences.

  • http://twitter.com/DCass11717 D Cass

Our politicians can get by with 2.4% less of our money to spend. Obama is a proven liar, so there’s no reason to take seriously anything he says about spending. It’s just a shame the mainstream media doesn’t hold him accountable for his rotten economic record.

  • Ramon Espinosa

Hey Bernie, the big con game; I will jump with glee when March 2nd comes and goes/cutting will not slow this Country down were just cutting waste x 10

  • Trappedincalifornia

Sequestration is fine with me, at least some tiny, small amount of future spending won’t be added to our colossal debt. Then we need to freeze all Fed hiring and spending, 86 Obamacare, Amnesty, Gun Control, EPA, Dept of Education and DHS.

  • pasquale mercurio

I see obama spreading propaganda all of the time, never an intelligent message to make us feel good! He could direct his attention to something ethical, moral and very important to us about the impact of GAS PRICES- if he spent one-thousandt of his “complaining time” during his presidential years on important things, maybe he could be PRESIDENTIAL!

  • J. Dickinson

Bernie, Well said, indeed. When I listened to Mr. Obama’s litany on sequestration, I let out a sigh. What rational, sentient being would believe such nonsense ? In today’s America, rational and critical thinking count for nothing, while shallowness is the new normal, i.e., shallow conversation and a superficial popular culture. The denizens of my former workplace could barely read, write, and spell. Their knowledge of the outside world went no further than the sports page or network news. Ditto for their conversation, which was almost exclusively about the NFL and the NBA, with NASCAR thrown in. They were a die-hard Obama groupie, and they were quick toss the dreaded “R” word if anyone voiced a valid question about policy. And these folks voted…for you-know-who.

  • Paul Courtney

Bernie: You can stop worrying, I just heard Obama doesn’t really believe all this gloom & doom, he’s just auditioning for a job after 2016 (the 9:00 slot on MSNBC opposite Hannity). And I hope he gets it, then we’ll never hear of him again!

  • Kit

Time to start drawing up the impeachment papers. What we have here is a total fraud, Obama, perpetrated on the American people. I seriously doubt that a Republican sitting president would be able to get away with what the current fraud in the White House has gotten away with sofar. It’s a disgrace/

Bernie, most intelligent American citizens already know that the America most of us grew up in is already gone…! But if “we the people” have the courage of our Founders & others who fought for a Free Constitutional Republic, we can reverse this devastation and corruption being carried out by the elitist and make America whole again. We have to use an “uncommon” sense approach to address the real issues of today, and stop skirting around silliness. Our Great Nation has faced much worse and not only survived, but also prospered. “We the people” have embedded with blood in our hearts & souls a sense of #Freedom and a true understanding of what our “inalienable” rights are, as noted by the Founders in our Declaration of Independence & Constitution…and “we the people” may procrastinate, but we will NEVER give up those RIGHTS & Freedoms. It will be “Give me Liberty or give me Death, until the very End!. GOD help us all!

  • FloridaJim

I am all in favor of forcing Obama into shooting himself in the foot, pardon the pun, with his own idea of sequestration. To make this happen we need spokesperson who can articulate the position and get that to every TV station in the country. As it now stands whatever Obama says is splashed across the country and the only answer is a weak response by Boehner or McConnell to a few outlets only and then only a partial viewing. We do get our message out and our spokespeople are inarticulate.

  • docww

Hey–this guy is really good. Don’t expect to out-Obama Obama. Bill Clinton was good at convincing the masses that his way was the path to nirvana. Obama brings a new level of ridiculousness to the Presidency, yet the masses follow along. Personally, I was happy to see Obama reelected for the entertainment value. He certainly is one of a kind.

I once knew a child who threatened his parents continually
in order to get his way.

They left him with me one afternoon (they mistakenly thought I was a baby sitter). There were tears, there were red faces, there were verbal
threats of death and wanton destruction….and then there was peace.

I sear, I never touched the blighter. He just came to the realization that I was emotionally invulnerable to his coercion and dried up. We had a pleasant afternoon together.

When his parents came to collect him and he was asked how things went, he blushed and told them things went OK. Dad got me to the side and asked me the same thing with a look of disbelief on his face.

For one reason or another, I was never asked to baby sit that child again but he was forever well behaved when he was around me (and always blushed when we met).

Only Fox viewers know that Sequester was Obama’s idea, used against Republicans to coerce them into “Fiscal Cliff” or whatever the Catastrophe du jour was! If he wants to stop it, all he has to do is what he said he would do when campaigning: Sharpen his pencil and go through the budget (what budget?) line by line to make “smart cuts” If not, then the Dumb Cuts that he incorporated into the Sequestor deal should be implemented. I really hope the GOP doesn’t cave on this one!
All the rest of us are down-sizing, selling off assets, cutting corners wherever we can, in my case,”prescription heart medication or food this month? Putting on sweaters and coats in the house to cut down on heating bills, not visiting grandchildren and children because we can’t afford the gas, taking NO vacations, buying NO clothes, eating “spam casseroles” for dinner while he and his cronies dine on lobster and steak while watching Beyonce’ perform. It might interest folks to know that in 2000, the CBO projected a government surplus of $780-Billion for the year 2008.

Having finally realized that these apocalyptic “budget cuts” known as “the sequester” are not cuts at all, but rather a fractional diminution in the pace of a deranged addiction to credit card debt and fiat money…

Words are inadequate to describe disgust I feel towards our elected officials, our news media, and most of all, an indolent and self-indulgent electorate which has suborned the demolition of our economy and our republic. We are a nation which has indulged itself in a mutual consensus of cognitive dissonance for two generations. We have squandered the legacy assets of this nation accrued over 200 years, in fewer than 40. And, as a consequence, we are served by a group of elected officials who have made it their profession to perpetuate self-destructive, globally malignant economic misconduct.

The fact that the Republican leadership is still trying to prevent this trivial sop to fiscal responsibility from taking place, simply demonstrates the pathological corruption which defines our government, and the inexcusable negligence of the American electorate.

F E A R- false expectations appear real. get everyone all ginned up over the delusions you get them to believe. get them to forget about all the past decisions based on similar motivations that resulted in the new real problems we face. get the same idiots who caused it all to fix it. problems piled on top of problems of our own making need more delusional thinking to address. the only time we are safe from these people are when they are on vacation, but not really. if this could really be fixed it would be, but they dont want it fixed they want work to do. hence more and more of the same until it collapses the whole magilla and we can start over. just start from the top of the post and read it again. although the timeline changes the process remains the same.

School Boards everywhere do the same thing locally. Inflicting maximum pain on what directly impacts students and parents such as firing teachers or taking money away from athletic and music departments. However, I have never heard a plan to get rid of some overpaid administrators that do nothing more than create extra work for others.

  • gbandy

Have you noticed the rhetoric from our fearless Campaigner in Chief? It always mentions the most dire of threats that really seem to work on the ignorant. Monday it was “We will have to fire thousands of Teachers”. Well why not close about a dozen worthless meaningless Government Agencies? You know like the DOE which was created by Carter to “Give the US energy independence”. Well the DOE has a zillion dollar budget and only the independent drillers are doing this for free. Even against all the red tape and regulations pouring out of the Obama EPA. Sequester was Obama’s idea now lets make him live with it. Cut away Congress.

  • sheila0405

Doesn’t Congress have some kind of discretion as to how the money in the budget is spent? For example, the House did not fund the closing of Gitmo. Why can’t Congress allocate money to the necessary parts of the budget, while not funding what is not necessary? I’m not sure how far into the agencies the Congress has authority over, but surely monies can be found in other parts of the budget to address the slight decrease in the projected budget of next year. If we even get a budget, that is…

Maybe OUR new slogan should be “SEQUESTER AWAY!” You are correct, your warnings were of no import. Those of us who knew, and voted, got a government we did not deserve. But, then, there’s the old saying: When bad things happen to good people … .”
My total focus is on enduring, out-thriving, this man who calls himself the president. He’s is not my president – he is my employee, yes, but not my president.
Up to now, he has not been worth the economic raise he has voted himself.

  • http://www.facebook.com/andrew.domenitz Andrew S Domenitz

by making the issue about the sequester, they deflect and block the real issue of this crazy borrowing and national debt. they have NO PLAN to set us back to the right course because it CANT BE FIXED. numbers dont lie and the numbers say we cant raise taxes enough to pay the debt down or reduce spending enough to make any difference without tanking the economy. the president convened a special commision and the recomendations were rejected offhand. the only possible result of these policies are the ruin of the economy here and by extension the whole world in chaos after they cant kick the can down the road anymore. of course they will step in to save us grabbing more control and removing more of your god given rights. decades of total fiscal and monatary and social insanity just cant be stopped without the disruption of what everyone views as normal. god forbid a return to reality because people are addicted to this delusion

  • jq2intx

I just hope that the Republicans in the House will not CAVE again. It is a good thing to let sequester happen, since as you point out, it is just a lessening of the amount that will be spent, not a true cut in spending.

  • Ernie

Bring on the cuts. Obama is like a little kid who kicks and screams when he doesn’t get his way….We just need some Republicans who can stand up and be the mature folks and say “No” and mean it the first time.

    • richard whaley

His “magic” is defined by the MSM. They are in line with what he believes. Conservatives have wrongly believed that people see things as they are. Liberals (the media) understand that people will believe whatever they tell them.

One of their high-priced – and obviously over-paid – communication consultants should be locked in a room developing manual called, “How to Respond to Idiotic Ideas from President ___” (insert name here); with the avalanche of negative publicity the GOP is getting, it’s doubtful Republicans will ever step inside the door of the Big House again.

I’m reminded of the old joke about 100 attorneys in quicksand being a good start. • john nazzaro

The terminology “cut” needs to be refined. The reductions in the forecast rate of increase are around 2% leaving the government with an aggregated forecast remaining increase in expenditures of approximately 3.5% on the year. The first thing any serious critic of the federal budget should do is get rid of “baseline budgeting” as an analytical concept. The impact of these reductions unfortunately are disproportionately borne by the military, and the obligatory methodology, across the board reduction,is particularly foolish for capital budgets (which are DOD intensive).

  • E. Jay Nilsson

What really worries President Obama is that he won’t be able, in effect, to go golfing or on another $10 million vacation until the sequester issue is settled.

In several of his recent stump speeches the President has said that the non-Defense spending cuts ($42.5BN) will sink our country into a recession, yet in the next breath he calls for a $50BN increase in gov’t spending without any accompanying increases in revenue.

It boggles the mind, but only if you pay attention and listen critically – his supporters, as Rush Limbaugh calls them ‘low information voters’, fail to do either it seems.

    • Deborah G

2% will not do anything but make a few bloated government agenceies cut some ewaste. How about we start with the wasteful staff of Michelle? or the cracked lobster chilled when she arrives everywhere she goes? Or how about Nancy Pelosi flys commercial like John Boehner does? how about we make Big Bird pay HIS fair share he;s a multi millionaire. How about we stop funding tourist railroads around orchards in california to the tune of 25 Million? I could cut the discretionary spending by 20% and no one would lose. the Military? Simply make the supplier contarcts funded only if they cut the blaoted prices by 10% that would be $20 for and $800 toilet seat. How about cutting free benefits ofr illegals? There is so much watse that 2% across the board is easy. AND the fact is it isn;t cuts at all rather future spending is what the deal is. So we hold the line for a few years better yet hold the line and decrease it every year until the budget balances.

      • Ken08534

I’d like to see us go a few years with ZERO increase in the annual budget – I mean year after year our annual budget is EQUAL to the previous year’s budget.
Politically we wouldn’t cutting anything and inflation will force department heads to prioritize spending.
And I would be fine with department-level spending being adjusted, but the annual budget bottom-line would not increase.

It’s real simple. Cut the spending. They have used the excuse that the govt has taken out the credit card and spent our children’s future. It’s obvious that it’s a Visa or Mastercard. When Obama opens the bill each month, he see the balance at 16 trillion. Then it says you must pay at least the minimun. Please enclosed $25.00 to remain a loyal cardholder. We need to change to Am Ex.

  • beniyyar

Either raise taxes or cut entitlements, or better yet a little of both with heavy emphasis on cutting entitlements, but raising entitlements and raising taxes is the shortest path to bankruptcy. The President seems bound and determined to do the latter, and since no one in the government wants to stop him, Americans should get ready for some really hard times.

    • Deborah G

NO RAISED taxes. It never worked and it never will

      • beniyyar

Since no politician is going to touch entitlements, ever, someone is going to have to pay taxes to support them, and that means the Middle Class. Of course this will wipe out the Middle Class in short order, and then the trouble will begin.

    Very well said, Bernie.

The president wants to tax–to punish his enemies and divide his opponents. He wants to spend, to pay off his allies. It’s all about power, as Alinsky taught him.

And yes, we do need far more cuts than 85 billion.

Husband: We have to cut our budget by 2% this year
Wife: I guess that means we won’t be able to serve meat for dinner or buy clothes for the kids
Husband: No I guess that means you’ll have to stop getting your nails done every week and I’ll have to play a little less golf.
Wife: Exactly what I’d expect from a Republican!

    • Deborah G

hahahah that was so good I’m still laughing. Sequester away!

    • http://www.facebook.com/phil.silverman.9 Phil Silverman

Yeah, yeah, yeah golf. How about John Birch Boehner GETS *HIS* RUMP OUTTA THE LINKS!!

      • Deborah G

WHy? Isn’t the same allowences made for republicans that we allow Obama? he plays local not at POSH courses with Tiger Woods and his Pro to the tune of 20 Million dollars on our tax dime.

      • Uncle Dave

At least Boehner doesn’t fly public property to the tune of $250 Million plus local and federal security, staffers, military staffers, other disruptions, etc. I live in South Florida and have been caught in his highness’ traffic jams.
I think he’s raising taxes just so he can fly to Hawaii, Florida and Chicago more…

      • alegalcitizen

Um, have you SEEN the line of SUV’s lined up to take Owebama’s rump to the golf course??? 10 of them BURNING up those fossil fuels, you know the fuel HE tells us is destroying the planet but of course that doesn’t apply to him. I would LOVE to know how much all his flying has cost the taxpayer!HOW much do you think it cost to fly his rump to Florida on air force one, the cost of the secret service, and on and on, WHY didn’t Owebama PAY with his own $$ the cost to fly Tiger to DC and play there???
One would think you were a “comedian” or had worked in social services with your thinking.

Perfectly put! May I borrow this?

  • Seattle Sam

I’ve worked with a lot of companies over my career and have NEVER found one that couldn’t cut out 2%

    • New Yorker

      Sam,
The government is not a company..is not run like a company, has no profit motive and unlike corporations is a democracy………….Wake up..

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.cembrale Joe Cembrale

I think you are one of “those” voters Bernie was writing about in the article. You know, the ones who think they are sophisticated and smart but really… You know, not.

      • Deborah G

It IS a business period. It takes money in and buys stuff. Then it takes money in and wastes it. A really really poorly run company and our CEO needs to be fired.

        • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joel-Wischkaemper/100000008210596 Joel Wischkaemper

I would like to see someone make a really serious effort to do an accounting for the Federal Government. I would hate to pay the bill.. I would do so gladly if some one can get it in place.

      • Tim Ned

Government or business makes no difference. We’re $16 Trillion in debt. Neither is to be to fail!

      • alegalcitizen

Maybe it SHOULD be run like a business, so what you’re saying is IF you run up a bill every month on your credit card, you don’t look for a way to cut the pork?

      • Trappedincalifornia

Whoa, if you actually believe what you wrote here, I have some swamp land you really gotta invest in. Send a cashiers check for all the $ you have, made out to C-A-S-H to blah blah blah…LMAO…..

  • skippy

right on Bernie! when will they ever learn….

  • DOOM161

Let’s not forget that republicans decided that the best strategy to beat Obamacare was to nominate the guy that wrote it.

    • nickshaw

      Sadly, I have to agree.
We can say all sorts of things to try to convince ourselves that it’s not true but, the sheep see it differently automatically.
We actually have to force ourselves to see the truth sometimes.

what’s the sadness? that the Mad Raider and Voucherizer of Medicare lost?? :)

        • http://www.facebook.com/joe.cembrale Joe Cembrale

You laugh about the Mad Raider but explain the move of Obama’s cheerleader of state Warren Buffett and the move he pulled with Heinz the other day. 50% of the stock at a cut rate price and let a management company from Brazil carve it ip for his profit. Dummy

    • sheila0405

And then, no one came out to vote for the guy. Way to go, GOP.

      • http://www.facebook.com/phil.silverman.9 Phil Silverman

right. no one. but Obama’s people stood on line for 8 hours.

        • http://www.facebook.com/joe.cembrale Joe Cembrale

Getting free stuffwill cause you to do that

        • alegalcitizen

          WHERE did that happen puppet?

        • Trappedincalifornia

Yup, first they stood in line to vote, then they mailed in their absentee ballots, then they drove some illegals to the polls, then they showed up at my polling place and gave the poll worker in her Obama t shirt a few more ballots they found in their trunk, you bet they voted, over and over again.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Joel-Wischkaemper/100000008210596 Joel Wischkaemper

Posh and poo… LOTS of people reacted to the 47% remark Jimmy Carters Nephew stole at the conference where Romney said such a thing. It was the antithesis of a chicken in every pot Obama, and that was a bummer.

        • sheila0405

I was speaking of GOP voters who stayed home rather than vote for Romney. There was anecdotal evidence, based on polling data, that many stayed home rather than vote for a Morman. In the end, these are the folks who inadvertently caused Romney to be the nominee, IMHO, b/c they couldn’t or wouldn’t coalesce around any of the more conservative GOP candidates in the GOP primary battles. As each one rose and then fell, a Romney victory was assured. Again, IMHO.

        • http://www.facebook.com/jeffrey.barouch Jeffrey Barouch

Joel, certainly you mean ‘ground dogmeat on spotted banana leaf’ in every pot!

    • http://www.facebook.com/phil.silverman.9 Phil Silverman

      Ow! Ow! Ow! Keep writin’!!!!!!!!

  • Patrick H.

What will it take to get President Obama to actually cut some spending? Or any politician for that matter? With all due respect Mr. President, you’ve used that same type of threatening with all of the other deals. We have to really cut some spending, not just by how much we increase spending and it doesn’t help that President Obama and the Democrats don’t see it necessary.

  • GlenFS

Sequestering will do little to slow this runaway train we’re on, but yes do it!

  • Phillip MacHarg

I’m with you Bernie. Enough is enough–sequester away! We’re dealing with a pathological president. Obama won’t come close to making a reasonable deal with conservatives.

    • Tim Ned

Agree Phillip. Close the doors on the bank and deal with the consequences. Better today than passing this off to my kids and grandchildren

      • http://www.facebook.com/phil.silverman.9 Phil Silverman

        tell it to Boehner…………..

        • Tim Ned

I did, I wrote him, Reid, and my representatives

        • alegalcitizen

Ummm WHO said they wouldn’t sign the bill IF Sequestration wasn’t IN it? Was it Boehner OR your president???

    • http://www.facebook.com/phil.silverman.9 Phil Silverman

sequester…John Birch Boehner dug it in ’11!!!! And his Tea Partyettes are now forming a conga-line!!!!!

      • http://www.facebook.com/joe.cembrale Joe Cembrale

Obama originally pitched the idea of sequestration. Dummy
