While watching the Trump speech (all of it, shockingly) I kept noticing a tension: he says he wants unity, but if what? The Republican Party? Yes, his speech did that in policy. Of the nation? Not so much. Obama made the same move in his speech at the colonnade when he became president. And he didn’t do it either. In effect, the move to the middle has to be demonstrated in policy and rhetoric, and not just in declaration.

David Gergen, who worked in (I think) five different presidential administrations from Nixon through Clinton and as a speech writer in several, said that one of the keys to a successful speech is leaving your audience wanting more.

My wife was asked to give a talk regarding one of her best friends at her friend's wedding reception. After telling my wife about Gergen's counsel, I drafted a short but heart-felt speech. Lo and behold, her friends all said that they wished the speech was longer.

Apparently, Bill Clinton didn't take Gergen's advice.

One other msg he should have made clear & would've appealed to moderates - that no matter the results of this election, it's his last ride. That in 2028, he'll exit the White House gracefully.

// free U.S. hostages

Count me in the minority who thinks just this one is actually doable & has merit. The way he does it is that he sends the Hamas leaders a picture of their house.

Being an 'old dude' I can tell you there is nothing new under the sun that is a surprise when it comes to politics. I can't remember liking any president (except my idol JFK, and we all know about his personal life)

I am confused about the overpowering focus on personalities and not what will effect us most, that being their vision for the country.

Face the truth. The condition of the nation was a lot better under Trump. Biden has systematically destroyed much of what Donald J. Trump accomplished. He may be an egoist. Most politicians are. But his election will bring much benefit to the United States. Remember, the most vilified President before Trump was Abraham Lincoln who is considered the greatest president.

I don't think history is going to be as kind to Donald Trump. Should he win, I am hoping it will be a successful four years without any of the nonsense. How about a redemption tour? QED

Yeah, and history SHOULDN'T be kind to a president who tried to overturn U.S. democracy to stay in power.

Yep. I can't ever forgive him for January 6. There is blood on his hands. People died. I thought there was nothing that would beat the over-the-top Obama ass kissing. I was wrong! The same people who have no problem (rightfully) criticizing Benghazi seem to have no problem ignoring January 6. Perhaps a bit hopeful on my part, having a little hope Donald Trump's close call will cause him to be a better person. Regardless, I still will not be voting for Donald Trump. QED
