Since it is Pam Brownnose Bondi that would actually release the files, does any serious person really think she'd release something that casts her boss in a bad light. The reason Trump did an about face on this is obvious - Bondi has been purging any reference to Trump - at least any that would suggest he did anything wrong, or knew about wrongdoing - and making sure all the nasty details about any high profile Democrats are left in for all to see.
I don't know if Trump would look at it this way, but I heard all along the reason was to protect the innocent. Alan Dershowitz was falsely accused and had to actively defend himself. And he has the power to do so. It appears that Epstein has several acquaintances throughout the years. Many innocent, and some guilty.
I'll be surprised is this release does not have sufficient redactions of high-profile people to be a mostly nothing-burger, with only some minor or throw-away players left unprotected.

My understanding is Trump doesn't want unverifiable information out there as it could potentially damage innocent people, rich or not
